An AMAZING jewel! The number of superlatives needed to describe this SUPERB GEM would still not do full justice to the remarkable eye appeal and ultra high end quality. One glance at this MS68+ half dime, and you will fall in love with it--it will be impossible to put down. Clearly, since the moment this coin was removed from the dies in 1859, it was put away and lovely cared for. We cannot imagine how this coin survived the Civil War, Reconstruction, financial panics in 1873 and 1893, and who knows what personal issues that affected the owners of this coin. What we are certain of is that it is tied for FINEST certified, and quite possibly FINEST KNOWN. A strong, brilliant mint luster blazes over smooth, pristine, FLAWLESS surfaces. That brilliance brings the vivid toning, particularly on the reverse to life. Shades of aqua, cobalt, teal, gold, amber, and rose hues blend beautifully together. The devices are very sharply struck up, with every detail crisply rendered to their absolute finest advantage. PCGS 5, NGC 4, CAC 2. There are 3 MS68+ coins reported on the PCGS Population report, but NONE have ever sold in auction. This coin is clearly fresh to the market. The Shapiro-Gardner PCGS MS68 CAC has a record from 2007 at $22,713 when Mr. Gardner purchased it. The James Lull MS68 sold in January 2005 for nearly $30,000.
