- Full Steps Superb Gem 1953-D Jefferson Nickel
Phenomenal Strike and Condition Rarity
1953-D Jefferson Nickel. MS-67 FS (PCGS).
This virtually pristine Superb Gem is beautifully toned in iridescent golden-apricot and champagne-pink. The colors blends with soft, satiny mint luster that is full and expectably smooth for the assigned grade. Sharply struck, as well, and eagerly anticipating inclusion in another high ranked Jefferson nickel on the PCGS Set Registry.
While the Denver Mint produced a respectable total of 59,878,600 nickels in 1953, as a whole the coiners did a poor job and turned out a mostly ill-defined issue. Scarce in all Mint State grades within the Full Steps category, the 1953-D is an extraordinary strike and condition rarity in PCGS MS-67 FS. When our consignor acquired this coin in January 2016 it was the first and, at that time, also the only example of this issue that PCGS has certified at this level. Since then it has been joined by only two other MS-67 FS coins, confirming the continued challenge advanced Jefferson nickel enthusiasts will experience when pursuing the 1953-D. The strongest bids are encouraged, for once this coin sells it may be many years before a similar bidding opportunity presents itself.
