D.W. COLLECTION. Rare in Mint State, the original mintage of 1848 dollars was only 15,000 and many were exported when the price of silver exceeded the face value. Survivors like the presently offered coin are a rare treat, usually only seen when collections are offered. Variegated shades of silver-gray blend over lustrous surfaces. The devices are generally well struck, with just some weakness noted on the reverse. This coin boasts a strong eye appeal for the grade assigned. PCGS 11, NGC 0, CAC 3. The only CAC-approved example sold in auction in the notoriously weak 2016 FUN auction, realizing $7,638. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $9,000, and keep in mind that a marginally finer MS63 will certainly bring into the five figure range. A great coin for a type or date set! Cert.
