1835 N-19 R5 Head of 1836 PCGS graded VF35.Rather glossy olive brown and steel. The eye appeal of this cent is nice and the surfaces appear perfectly smooth to the unaided eye, but a glass reveals extremely faint granularity under the glossy toning, strongest at AM in AMERICA. The only marks are a speck of verdigris under the left edge of the E in CENT and a minor scratch that meanders through the left side of the N in CENT. Neither defect is visible without the aid of a good glass. MDS, the usual die state with a worn obverse die and new reverse die. A fine double profile shows on the forehead and on stars 6-9, and the reverse is rotated 20 degrees CW. Graded VF30 net F15 and tied for CC#10 in the Noyes census, his photo #22568. Our grade is VF20+. This example was discovered unattributed by John D. Wright in 1982, and it was the final die variety added by Dan Holmes to complete his Middle Date Cent collection in 1986. At that time it was the third finest of only nine known. A nice cent with an interesting history. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 4 finer: 1 in 45, 1 in 50, 2 in 64. PCGS #37072.Estimated Value $600 - UP
