- What a neat and historic issue! Shortly after the southern states formed the Confederacy, the New Orleans mint was commandeered by rebel forces, and they continued to strike federal coins in limited quantity. In April 1861, a local engraver created a new die, featuring a shield with 7 stars in the azure, within a wreath of cotton and wheat. Only four originals were struck, two of which are currently in private hands, and are mid-high six figure numismatic treasures. In 1879, J.W. Scott, a coin dealer at the time bought the CSA die and planing down the reverses of federal 1861-O half dollars, he produced 500 restrikes for collectors. The presently offered coin is very pleasing, featuring deep silver-gray with accents of amber-gold around the CSA devices. The strike on both sides is bold and quite pleasing throughout. Since they were struck for collectors most restrikes are in higher AU grades (the “wear” is usually from light handling as a curiosity),, but over the years many have been cleaned. This coin is a very pleasing exception. As a choice AU, this piece is about the average certified grade, but the eye appeal is certainly finer! PCGS 20, NGC 6. The most recent AU55 to sell was the Kendall Foundation coin that sold for $9,400 in March 2015. This coin is certainly stronger in detail and better in overall eye appeal than that coin. The PCGS Price Guide value is $10,000. This is a coin that has always been in demand in light of the extreme rarity of the originals. This will be a centerpiece to any collection of numismatic Americana. PCGS # 340402 Certification Number 81422025 PCGS # 340402
