- Undated (1659) Lord Baltimore Sixpence. Hodder 2-C, W-1060. Small Bust. VF-35 (PCGS). 37.04 grains. A highly desirable example of this famous 17th century coinage with a 19th century provenance. Attractive medium silver gray with old golden highlights on both sides. Evenly worn and pleasing, scattered light marks commensurate with grade. A well-hidden mark from this coin's stay in circulation is noted in Calvert's hair, "hardly noticeable" as Henry Chapman said in 1907. A similar dig is present in the lower half of the shield. Wholesome circulated Lord Baltimore silver is hard to find. Many of the lower grade examples are damaged in one way or other (holed and plugged, especially). Most of the known population of this denomination is from the 19 pieces found in England about a decade ago, few of which boasted surface originality. This example shows good sharpness and eye appeal to go along with its surface quality and provenance. Stickney was collecting in earnest by 1840, and this piece was likely in his collection before the Civil War.
