GREAT BRITAIN. Shilling, 1787. London Mint. George III. PCGS AU-58. S-3743; KM-607.1. Variety without semee of hearts. Beautifully toned with strong luster, this charming minor has only a trace of wear on the reverse details and George's hem, which count as the only flaws given the stunning surfaces. After taking the throne during the Seven Years War, George III oversaw the end of the conflict as the victorious power. The victory had far-reaching consequences in the Royal Proclamation of 1763 that limited westward expansion in the American Colonies. Additionally, new taxes imposed by the crown upon the colonists for their defense, contributed to a growing independence sentiment. The resultant American Revolution and loss of the profitable 13 Colonies is the most important event of George III’s reign. After the American War of Independence, the rise of Napoleon and fighting a series of naval and land conflicts with France occupied the British Empire thereafter. By the last decade of his life, George III was suffering a full-blown case of mental illness which made his royal duties hard to fulfill. George died early in 1820, and his legacy is complex and uniformly controversial. Despised as a tyrant by some, and glorious defender of Britannia from France by others, his rule is one of the most notable. During his reign, a major coinage reform occurred with a Sovereign worth 20 Shillings replacing the older Guinea worth 21. Silver coinage was struck in great quantities after 1816 to make up for a small change shortage that had plagued Britain for several decades.
