- FROM THE M & S PETTY COLLECTION The 1854 is another date that saw limited mintage, only 33,140 were struck for circulation, using a single set of dies. Of that number Osburn Cushing estimate 300 survive in all grades, PCGS CoinFacts suggests 900. Regardless, this is another challenging date in all grades, especially so in CHOICE Mint State or finer grades. The current example is housed in an older blue tag holder. The devices show razor sharp definition on both the obverse and reverse, every detail is fully and crisply defined from an exacting strike. The luster is satiny and brilliant with hints of reflective tendencies under the thick layer of medium iridescent toning. Lilac-rose, lavender-gray, slate-blue, and hints of gold mix over the surfaces. The eye appeal is excellent. Ex Sal Germano Rare Coins, via Ebay. PCGS 6, NGC 6. The most recent example to sell in auction without CAC approval realized $14,688 in the 2017 FUN auction and the current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $22,500. There are 10 graded finer.
