- 1858 Silver Three-Cent Piece. MS-66+ (PCGS). CAC.
A lovely premium Gem that is seemingly earmarked for inclusion in a high grade type set. Handsome steel-olive and champagne-pink patina blankets both sides and delivers undeniable originality. Smooth and frosty throughout, with a generally bold strike to boot. The brief Type II silver three-cent piece of 1854 to 1858 is the most challenging design of the denomination to locate in the finest Mint State grades. The relatively high mintage 1857 and 1858 are the most frequently encountered in Choice and Gem Uncirculated, but in an absolute sense a coin such as that offered here is very scarce from a condition standpoint.
Provenance: From the Jerome S. Reznick Collection. Earlier from Hollinbeck-Kagin's 298th Mail Sale, September 1972, lot 1120. Collector tag with provenance notation included.
PCGS Population: 5; 15 finer (MS-68 finest).
CAC Population: 16; 3. The former total includes coins certified both MS-66 and MS-66+.
PCGS# 3674. NGC ID: 22Z7.
