FROM THE DR. STEPHEN DAVIDSON COLLECTION An exceptional GEM quality example of this important Seated Liberty half dollar. Proof sets were first struck for mass public sale in 1858; though Proofs of earlier dates were struck for well connected collectors, this represents the first year they were made for public sale. Original mintage figures are estimated at 100 (PCGS CoinFacts) and 300 (Red Book). Regardless, fewer than 125 are estimated to survive today. This GEM is of exceptional quality and eye appeal. Ultra watery mirrored fields gleam boldly on both sides, accented by a gorgeous palette of teal, violet, tangerine, and gold toning. Classic old time collection looks define this beautiful GEM. The eye appeal is simply outstanding. PCGS 6, NGC 7, CAC 2. This coin is the only CAC approved example to sell in auction, realizing $6,756 in the 2015 FUN auction. The current CAC CPG value is $7,550 and the PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $8,500. Just three are graded finer at PCGS.
