- 1858 Liberty Seated Half Dime. MS-67 (NGC).
Intensely lustrous brilliant-white surfaces are satin to softly frosted in finish. Sharply struck throughout, with bold clash marks (as made) in the fields that add further interest. A lovely coin that is sure to impress even the most discerning collector. The aftermath of the Act of February 21, 1853 saw half dime production at both the Philadelphia and New Orleans mints remain strong for most years until the outbreak of the Civil War. In 1858 the Philadelphia Mint struck 3,500,000 pieces for circulation, resulting in an issue that is overall common in today's market. High quality survivors such as this are scarce, nonetheless, with Q. David Bowers estimating only 150 to 200 survivors grading MS-65 or finer in the 2016 reference A Guide Book of Liberty Seated Silver Coins. The significance of this offering for both high grade type and date purposes is undeniable.
Provenance: From the Sydney F. Martin Collection.
NGC Census: 29; 3 finer (MS-68 * finest).
