- 1854-FD Round 50 Cents. BG-403. Rarity-7. Liberty Head. MS-63 (PCGS).
This flashy piece is universally semi-prooflike with pale straw-gold color. This rare and significant variety is one of just two of the round 50 cents denomination that displays the maker's initials FD - for Frontier, Deviercy & Co. -- prominently on the obverse. The other is the nearly as rare BG-404, and the two were actually coined from the same obverse die. Writing in the 2003 edition of the Breen-Gillio reference California Pioneer Fractional Gold, Bob Leonard enumerates just nine examples of BG-403. Of the nine pieces mentioned, one is plugged, and the reader is also cautioned that there may be some duplication in the listings, which probably explains the conservative estimate of "7 to 9 known" provided by PCGS CoinFacts. Just how many examples of BG-403 actually do exist? The number could be more or less than the estimates given, but either way, the present piece is among the finest known when compared to the coins in the Leonard census. The variety has a current rating of Rarity-7, and will be a welcomed addition to another specialized cabinet. A shallow planchet flaw (as made) at the letter D in FD and the adjacent star is mentioned as a provenance marker.
Provenance: From the Oregon Collection.
PCGS Population: 5; 2 finer (both MS-64).
PCGS# 10439. NGC ID: 2BJN.
