- 1844 Liberty Head Eagle. AU-50 (PCGS).
Here is a low mintage Liberty Head eagle rarity in a particularly desirable state of preservation. Solid AU quality is exhibited by bold to sharp definition and predominantly lustrous honey-apricot surfaces. Original mint luster is particularly pronounced under direct light. Ten-dollar eagle production at the Philadelphia Mint dipped to just 6,361 pieces in 1844, making this the second lowest mintage of the denomination from 1839 through 1857 (only the 1857-O has a lower mintage from that era, at 5,500 coins struck). As one should perhaps expect, the 1844 is very scarce in an absolute sense, and we believe that fewer than 100 survivors can be accounted for, perhaps even fewer than 75. Only three Mint State examples have been certified, two MS-61s and an MS-63, all of which are listed at NGC. Clearly this minimally circulated survivor certified by PCGS represents an important bidding opportunity for advanced collectors of Liberty Head gold coinage.
