- 1845-O Liberty Head Eagle. Winter-4. Repunched Date. EF-45 (PCGS). CAC.
Appealing original surfaces exhibit rich honey-gold color with faint traces of luster readily evident. Plenty of bold to sharp striking detail remains, the eye appeal superior for both the issue and the assigned grade. An important offering for New Orleans Mint gold variety specialists, the Winter-4 attribution is a dramatic Repunched Date that Doug Winter (2020) describes as follows:
The date was first punched well far to the right and then corrected. There are strong remnants of the 8 and the 5 visible below light magnification with the 8 between the existing 84 and the 5 to the right of the existing 5.
The original 8 and the existing 8 are the same size and on the same plane while the upper flag of the previous 5 is considerably higher than that of the existing 5. There are some readily visible raised horizontal lines that run out from the rear of the original 5 that are remnants from a crude effacement attempt.
Winter-4 is also a very rare variety with Winter aware of only three examples, one of which is the discovery coin from our (Bowers and Merena's) Bass III sale. The present specimen from the Fairmont Collection is a newcomer to the census, and as a premium quality Choice EF with CAC approval it is sure to sell for a very strong premium.
Provenance: From the Fairmont Collection-Hendricks Set.
CAC Population: 6 in all EF grades.
PCGS# 8593. NGC ID: 262V.
