- An Immaculate Example -- Among the Finest Known!
GREAT BRITAIN. Anne Coronation Gold Medal, 1702. PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield.
MI-228/4; Eimer-390. By J. Croker. Obverse: ANNA D G MAG BR FR ET HIB REGINA, diademed and draped bust left; Reverse: VICEM GERIT ILLA TONANTIS, Anne (as Pallas-Athena) standing right, holding shield and hurling thunderbolt at two-headed and four-armed serpentine monster (James 'III' and Louis XIV) to right, holding rocks and clubs; in two lines in exergue, INAVGVRAT XXIII AP / MDCCII. Tied with just one other specimen as the finest graded across both services, this decidedly near choice example offers an alluring yellow-gold hue and rather bold strike for the type. The luster is radiant and allows it to look as fresh as the day on which it was struck.
The interesting aspect of this highly detailed reverse presents the contemporary concern in England over the dual threat of French king Louis XIV and the 'Old Pretender'--the exiled son of former king, James II. Following the Glorious Revolution, the catholic James II was driven from England and forced into exile in France, while the protestant William of Orange and his wife (and James's daughter), Mary were welcomed in his place. This medal alludes to the hope for the newly crowned Anne--also a daughter of James II, and raised protestant like her elder sister--to safely rule and fight back the Stuart-France Catholic alliance.
Estimate: $10,000 - $15,000.
