- FROM THE HUNTER COLLECTION. Ex Link. Demand for half dollars in 1827 must have been huge, as nearly 5.5 million were struck. The mint, still using manual production methods of a screw press and hand punching dies, needed 28 obverse and 34 reverse dies to complete their work, resulting in 49 different die combinations or marriages for the date. To put that in perspective, for all dates, 1807-1836, there are a total of 453 die marriages, so more than 10% of the known die combinations came from this one year alone! The O-136 offered here is a VERY SCARCE die variety, rated R-4, and the MS63 grade is solidly in the lower end of the Condition Census. Satiny lustrous surfaces show off an excellent glow. Mostly a frosty silver, a light golden overtone with pale iridescent accents give this lovely CHOICE Mint State Capped Bust half dollar a wonderful look. PCGS 144, NGC 74. The last time a PCGS MS63 example of this die variety appeared in auction was in a June 2006 Mail Bid auction. That coin was from the DeOlden Collection and was the rarer "prime" die state. The only "regular" O-136 in 63 to sell was even longer ago, selling in September 2004. For the date, the current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $3,750. This one is worthy of a strong bid from the specialist collector. Cert. Number 29531481 PCGS # 006144
