EX AMON CARTER COLLECTION, as noted on the holder. An important coin, hailing from one of the greatest silver dollar collections of all time, the Amon G. Carter Collection. A Proof only date, and struck during the first year that Proofs were struck for sale to the general public, the mintage was quite low. While no official record was kept, the oft sited mintage of less than 80 was apparently told to the Chapman Brothers by Patterson Dubois, an employee of the Philadelphia mint. Today, the most recent mintage estimate, reported in the Osburn Cushing reference estimates 275 originals and 35 restrikes. Both sides of this VERY CHOICE 1858 dollar show off glassy mirrored fields that have a flashy reflection, especially when rotated in a light. Lovely peripheral toning, showing shades of gold, blue, amber-orange, and rose, with a slightly angular pattern, which is almost a signature for the Proof Seated Liberty dollars from the famed Carter Collection. A strong glass shows some light hairlines in the fields, which are all that keep this really attractive coin from a CAC-bean. Amon Carter was, among other things, the publisher of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and a director of American Airlines, as well as on the board of the Texas Rangers Baseball team. He was an avid coin collector, whose amazing collection, which boasted one of the most extensive silver dollar and U.S. Gold coin selections was sold by Stack's in January 1984, where this coin appeared as lot 267. Also appearing in that sale was the Specimen 1794 silver dollar, which our founder Laura Sperber bought later on for a world record price for any U.S. coin, over $10,000,000! PCGS 7, NGC 12. There has not been an NGC-graded coin in PR64 since March 2010--that coin brought $13,800. This coin has apparently not been sold in auction since September 2003, when it sold uncertified, and was described as "Choice Brilliant Proof, with the glorious visual appear of a higher grade." The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $22,000. Extremely RARE any finer, NGC has graded just 13 coins finer in all designations. This is one of the classic silver dollar issues, and highly desirable in all grades, but especially so in PR64! Cert. Number 1736190-001 PCGS # 007001
