Condition Census 1822 Newcomb-11 MS-65 (NGC) Ex Smith-Naftzger 1822 Matron Head Cent. N-11. Rarity-2. MS-65 BN (NGC). A marvelous Gem with significant satiny luster blanketing the fields on each side. The design elements boast a more frosty texture and remain fully devoid of friction. Overall a rich cocoa brown with suggestions of violet and olive throughout. A shallow mark at Liberty's chin and a bagmark above the N in ONE will help in tracing this jewel through future cabinets. Liberty's portrait is peppered with minute traces of die rust as is seen in all states, though the rust at stars 12 and 13 has been removed here in Noyes Die State B/B. This piece is a significant offering for Early Copper specialists and presents a handsome pedigree to complement the exceptional preservation. It is traceable back 50 years to March 1969 and has since passed through the hands of such renowned numismatists as R. E. Naftzger and C. Douglas Smith. Smith called this piece the "finest known of this very rare in the high grades variety" when detailing its provenance in the early 1980s. More recently, specialists Noyes, Bland, and Demo assigned it an EAC grade of MS-60 and ranked it in 4th place of their 2005 Condition Census. It is tied with just 5 other examples at the very top of the NGC Census including all 1822 varieties, and not a single coin has been certified finer within this color designation.
