- 1853 Round 25 Cents. BG-215. Rarity-7-. Liberty Head. AU-58 (PCGS).
Flint-gray and medium honey colors blend over both sides of this handsome near-Mint example. Boldly defined for the issue with impressively smooth surfaces that are free of troublesome marks. This rare issue is attributed to Frontier, Deviercy & Co., and features the same obverse as the firm's BG-214 issue. On the reverse the date is jauntily askew within the wreath, similar to BG-214, but from a different die with the 4 in the denomination thin, nearly devoid of its bottom support, and leaning crazily to the viewer's left. BG-215 was discovered by Jay Roe in 1978 and published in Lee in 1979. Only a dozen examples of the variety were listed in Bob Leonard's census in 2003, likely duplication explaining PCGS' estimate of 10 to 12 known. BG Die State I, with six berries on the left branch of the wreath.
Provenance: From the Oregon Collection.
PCGS Population: 4; 6 finer (MS-64 finest).
PCGS# 10400. NGC ID: 2BHJ.
