- 1795 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar. BB-21, B-1. Rarity-2. Two Leaves. EF-45 (PCGS).
This is a pleasing Choice EF, both sides warmly and evenly toned with overall bold definition. The strike is well centered within uniformly denticulated borders, and the surfaces are remarkably smooth in hand for a lightly circulated silver dollar from the earliest years of U.S. Mint coinage. Given the rarity of the first year 1794, the second year 1795 is the only realistic type candidate in the brief Flowing Hair series as far as most numismatists are concerned. Demand is high and far outstrips supply, however, especially for examples in the finer circulated and Mint State grades. Bowers-Borckardt 21, offered here, is the second most common die marriage of the issue after BB-27, and the most plentiful of the Two Leaves Guide Book variety. The obverse die is readily identifiable since the digit 7 in the date is repunched over an erroneous 1, leading come numismatist to describe this variety as 1795/1195. In this marriage the obverse is mated with a reverse that exhibits paired berries opposite the letters I in UNITED, A in STATES, O in OF, and I in AMERICA.
PCGS# 6853.
