- PHILIPPINES. Philippines - Guatemala. 8 Reales, ND (1832-34). Ferdinand VII. PCGS EF-40 Gold Shield; Countermark: XF Details.
KM-55; Basso-41; cf. Gil Crown variety-5-4-1-C (1 over *). Type V Countermark, crowned F.7.0 within circle applied to the reverse of an 1826-NGM Guatemala (Central American Republic) 8 Reales. Issued by decree of 2 October 1832, commencing 5 October 1832, officially ending 20 December 1834. A SCARCE and popular host coin with a rather RAREand interesting countermark variety that seldom appears on the market exhibiting a small die crack in the lower left quadrant extending into the field above the cipher. The countermark is deeply applied with clear diagnostics making identification an easy venture. A thin crack is noticed on mostly prominently on the reverse due to application of the countermark mentioned for accuracy. A highly attractive example of the type displaying rich old cabinet patina with a lovely iridescent sheen displaying hues of blue and purple.
Interesting to note that the central pearl of the crown in the shape of a lozenge has been repunched over a single pearl. This can be further confirmed by the shape and style of the letters and crown and proves that the order of the F.7.0 countermarks is in fact 5-4-*, 5-4-1 and then finally 5-4-!(2).
Estimate: $2,000 - $3,000.
