- 1846 Liberty Seated Half Dime. Proof-65 (PCGS). CAC. One of perhaps 10-15 known of which a grand total of 9 at most have been certified. The toning is spectacular with flecks green, rose and lemon span the surfaces, with the central devices silver-gray and matching the elegant fields. Free of all but minute signs of handling, with the delicate mirror fields complete and well preserved. The strike is bold and complete, with no signs of softness to be found. Of course, the 1846 half dime is also a very rare date with a small mintage of 31,300 pieces coined for circulation, keeping collecting pressure high for any of these that turn up.

PCGS has graded just two examples in Proof, this piece and another as PR-64. NGC has graded the balance of 7 pieces. Diagnostics included thin die files lines down to the first star, another on the reverse touches the left serif of the first A in AMERICA up near the top of the F in OF. One of the highlights auction for the astute numismatist to pursue.

Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers
If I were to have just one Proof Liberty Seated half dime from the 1840s I would unhesitatingly pick the 1846. Some might be rarer, but the reputation of the 1846 as the key date of the decade, based upon the elusive quality of circulation strikes, gives it a special cachet. The present piece is outstanding. I expect a lot of competition when this crosses the block.
