- S.3845; KM-707. William IV. This might be labeled the "drop 4" variety or date, as the digit is lower than the others, out of line, and appears to have been dropped. What actually happened is that the entire date should have been placed farther left under the bust. This is a very rare date, and type, for King William's biggest coppers are seldom seen better than XF. This specimen is extraordinarily nice, with luscious chocolate surfaces showing traces of mint red, and a lovely portrait of the Sailor King. The reverse is sharp, with a delightful Britannia, but there is some metal stress from the rolling of the metal in the upper right and left fields. All in all, however, this is a fantastic copper, and it has few equals in all of British numismatics. 2005 Spink catalogue value is £650 in "Unc" but decent Williams have been selling in the UK for more in recent months. We feel our estimate is conservative. NGC graded MS-65 Brown.
Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,500.
The Cheshire Collection.
