1803 S-248 R4 "Mumps" Obverse. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown.Lustrous tan and light steel brown blending to light chocolate on the highpoints. Mellowed mint red covers about 10% of the reverse and the eye appeal of that side is superb. The obverse, however, suffers from a mint-made impression in the planchet at the dentils left of the lowest curl (possibly a struck-through line from a piece of wire; probably a void in the planchet present before striking). Regardless it catches your eye. Otherwise the notable marks are a puff of darker brown toning in the field off the chin, a line of impressed dentils in the field before the eye, and a few contact marks in the field before the upper lip. E-MDS, Breen state I late, with a very faint die crack through the top of ERI. The "Mumps" break at the throat is strong. Graded MS60 net AU55 and finest known in the Noyes census, his photo #21023. Bland says MS63 and finest known (the only mint state example in his census). Our grade is MS60.The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer and the only MS graded at PCGS.(PCGS # 36362) Value $25,000 - UP
