Great Britain.Pattern English Shilling, 1937.Struck in silver to a matt finish by G Kruger Gray, MODEL at center of reverse, plain raised rim. Lion perched horizontally on Crown. Designer's initials K G feature above. Edge milled. Mint State. (See Dyer: 'Proposed coinage of Edward VIII') unrecorded and excessively rare, possibly unique. This was the pattern or model for the proposed coinage of King Edward VIII. Edward abdicated the throne in December 1936 to marry Wallace Simpson, and consequently there was never a regular currency issue for this monarch. There remain however a few trial strikings. Many of his designs, including those for the proposed English and Scottish shillings, by Kruger Gray, were later featured on the coinage of his brother, King George VI until his death in 1952. The companion piece-- the Edward VIII Scottish Pattern Shilling 1937 sold in the Spink London sale, 11 July 2001, Lot 1052.
Estimated Value $2,200 - 2,500.
