A very scarce, lower mintage date with only 77,130 struck, and as more gold flowed from the California rush, the ratio of gold and silver in circulation forced the price of silver up, making it very profitable for folks to export silver coins to be melted into silver bullion. The present coin is fully Choice with a radiant satiny frost that provides a back light to the classic old collection soft dove-rose, powder-blue, and lilac-silver patina. Nicely struck on both the obverse and reverse, the eye appeal is very nice. PCGS 21, NGC 8. We think there is duplication in these figures. Regardless this is a VERY SCARCE issue, and very rare any finer. In the last decade, only two PCGS-graded coins have sold in auction--the last one bringing $3,525 in February 2017 (not this coin). The current PCGS Price Guide value is $4,250. We very much like the look of this scarce issue and think it will fit very nicely in a wonderful set of Seated half dollars! Cert.
