- 42 graded AU-58, 54 higher at PCGS. It wasn't until 1931 that specialists realized a 1917 obverse die had been re-hubbed with a 1918 logotype to create the famous overdate so coveted by collectors today. During the intervening years, nearly all examples had long entered circulation, leading to the situation today whereby very few are known in mint-state. For that matter, "about-uncirculated" overdate nickels are also very rare, with the particularly notable grade of AU-58 represented by only around forty entries at this level, according to PCGS. Essentially all of the original mint luster remains intact across both sides, although the cataloger surmises this to be a later die-state, susceptible to die erosion, and thereby some prominent flowline texture permeates the fields. A small die crack connects the end of the Indian's nose to the rim, not seen for earlier struck examples, and another trickles off right from Frasier's monogram. And yet another tiny die defect connects the top of "91" in the date, next to the readily visible overdate feature. All of this is to illustrate the fascinating aspect of this particular "gem AU" example, but all 1918/7-D nickels are desirable, and this one certainly stands upon its own merits. Probably well struck as it emerged from Carson City.
