- 1839 Modified Matron Head Cent. N-12. Rarity-4. Booby Head. AU-53 (PCGS). Steel blue and golden highlights rest atop the mahogany facade of this handsome Condition Census specimen. The fields are smooth and largely unmarked, displaying considerable luster in most regions. Sharply defined despite a late die state, the diagnostic obverse crack now fully bisects that face. A thoroughly appealing representative of this scarce variety. This piece ranks in the upper end of known examples from the Newcomb-12 dies, with just two MS-60 pieces topping the census in William Noyes' 1991 roster. We had the pleasure of offering the Helfenstein-Naftzger example (EAC MS-60) in our July 2015 sale of the Twin Leaf Collection, Part I, where it realized $7,050 certified MS-64 BN by PCGS.
