- 1842-D Liberty Quarter Eagle. Winter 3-F, the only known dies. MS-61 (NGC). After only the 1840-D, the low-mintage (4,643 pieces) 1842-D is the rarest pre-1853 Dahlonega Mint Quarter Eagle. It is also the second-rarest of all Dahlonega Mint Two-and-a-Halves in high grades, receiving serious competition for this claim from only the 1856-D. Mint State survivors are of the utmost rarity, and we are familiar with only four distinct examples having made their appearance at auction in the past decade. All four pieces constitute the upper reaches of Condition Census for this elusive issue.<br /> Warm, even, khaki-gold color blankets both the obverse and the reverse, all areas also revealing equally sharp definition. Indeed, the strike seems uncommonly well executed by the standards of both the issuing Mint and the individual issue. With none but small, wispy abrasions scattered about, this piece may have secured an even higher grade were the surfaces a bit more vibrant in sheen. Exceptional quality for the issue, and a coin that belongs in another important Southern gold collection. A pair of shallow nicks in the reverse field above the olive branch should help establish this coin's pedigree.
