FROM THE M & S PETTY COLLECTION Ex Ashland City Collection, as noted on the insert. Among the FINEST examples extant from the first mintage of dollars from the New Orleans mint. Only a single set of dies was used to coin the 59,000 examples that fell from the dies and most went into circulation. This date is RARE at this grade level and EXTREMELY RARE any finer. This lovely coin is deeply and richly toned, but when the light hits the surfaces the color really pop; it is not dark or drab in any way. Shades of tangerine and violet really come to the fore, melding with battleship and slate blue-gray tones.
