- 1855 Pattern Flying Eagle Cent. Judd-168 Original, Pollock-193. Rarity-4. Proof-66 BN (NGC). 92.6 grains. A hook-neck eagle flies to the left in the obverse field with 13 stars around the border and the date 1855 below. On the reverse, a laurel wreath encloses the denomination ONE CENT with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border. Struck in a bronze alloy of 94% copper, 6% tin with a plain edge.<br /> The weight provided on the NGC insert confirms this piece as an original striking of Judd-168, examples of which vary in weight from 90.0 grains to 99.8 grains. Both sides are bold-to-sharp in strike, the surfaces retaining considerable amounts of original medium-orange color despite the dominance of mottled glossy-brown patina. There are no blemishes of note, as befits the Gem grade assigned by NGC. Among the finest certified!
