- 1877 Shield Nickel. Proof-65+ (PCGS). CAC. The complexion of this coin is icy and pearlescent, boasting reflective fields and satiny devices with no visible patina. With an estimated mintage of 1,250 to 1,500 pieces (per Bowers, 2006), the Proof-only 1877 is the rarest date in the Shield nickel series of 1866 to 1883. While survivors appear in today's market on a fairly regular basis, few are as expertly preserved and visually appealing as this premium quality specimen. Approval by CAC further confirms the superior quality. Provenance: From the Jerome S. Reznick Collection. Earlier from our (Stack's) sale of June 1972, lot 742.
