- The mint stopped striking Morgan dollars in 1904, and in 1918, millions of silver dollars that were sitting in storage were melted down into bullion to the auspices of the Pittman Act. Following the mass melting, in 1921 the mint began striking dollars again. Over 44.6 million dollars fell off the presses in Philadelphia, but these are VERY RARE in SUPERB GEM grade. Indeed, at this lofty state of preservation, PCGS has graded only 21 pieces. The 1921, is also a rarity with any kind of attractive toning. The presently offered 1921 Morgan dollar combines both, making it one of very few examples for the collector looking to build a superb toned set. Both sides are attractively toned, clearly this coin was carefully stored in an old envelope, which allowed it to take on a wonderful, even toning. A dominant olive-tan hue is dusted over the centers with dappled pastel rose, lilac, gold, pink, and green hues. The peripheral areas are somewhat deeper, framing both sides. For the date, we rate the color 8+ on our 10 point scale. The strike is bold and crisp with sharp central devices and the surfaces are very clean. A vibrant luster brings it all together in a VERY ATTRACTIVE total package. PCGS 21, NGC 13. This is a very rare opportunity for the toned dollar collector. We suspect this SUPERB GEM will bring more than the $12,500 listed in the PCGS Price Guide. The surfaces are cleaner than the one we sold in 2019 for $14,688. Good luck. Cert.
