- HONDURAS. 10 Centavos, 1871. Tegucicalpa Mint. PCGS MS-66.
KM-35; Stickney-C302. Mintage: 17,000. One-year type. An often overlooked Central American type that was designed by assistant engraver of the U.S. Mint, William H. Key. Entirely museum quality, this coin features a full strike with exceptional flash in the fields and instances of wispy gold and olive tone over both sides that compliment its originality. Virtually no marks appear upon close inspection, giving it an essentially flawless look in hand. EXTREMELY RARE quality for the type, as not only is it the single finest graded at PCGS or NGC, but it's also the only example to receive a Mint State grade!
An odd and curious issue, which is dated to 1871, but largely due to hostilities between El Salvador and Honduras during that year, was not actually struck until 1879-80 when the dies, as well as new minting machinery from Philadelphia, were released after having been captured. In addition to the date being inaccurate on this type, so is the fineness, as they were apparently struck in .835 fine silver instead of the .900 fine which was engraved on the die.
Estimate: $400 - $800.
Provenance: From the Matthew Orsini Collection.
