PCGS MS-64+ Full Steps
1961-D Jefferson Nickel. MS-64+ FS (PCGS).
Exceptionally well struck for a 1960s Jefferson nickel, this important near-Gem also offers bright satin luster. Fully untoned and highly appealing, this delightful piece is seemingly earmarked for inclusion in another outstanding Jefferson nickel collection on the PCGS Set Registry.
Collecting the finest quality 20th century coins available from the latter half of that century is an area that is growing by leaps and bounds across all denominations in today's numismatic marketplace. From Lincoln Memorial cents through Kennedy half dollars, today's connoisseurs all strive for the same goal, the pursuit of perfection. Perfection doesn't always mean MS-70, however - just ask any collector of colonial and early American issues. For most dates in the Jefferson nickel series the pursuit of perfection boils down in many instances to the number of steps visible on the porch of Monticello on the reverse, and not the numeric grade. Indeed, many dates may have listings of MS-67 or other lofty grades, but perhaps the finest certified coin with FS details is "just" MS-64. Many dates, particularly in the 1950s and early to mid-1960s are as flat as the proverbial pancake in that area. To appreciate how elusive the 1961-D Jefferson nickel is with full steps, just take a look at the population data below. Watch the specialists flock to this rarity.
