1860 Liberty Seated Half Dime. MS-67+ (PCGS). CAC. This is a magnificent Superb Gem with champagne-gold iridescence and intense satiny luster on both sides. Richly frosted across the devices and lightly reflective in the fields. Smartly impressed with razor sharp striking detail and outstanding surface preservation that approaches numismatic perfection. The final design type in the half dime series made its debut in 1860 with mintages from the Philadelphia and New Orleans mints. Liberty's portrait is similar to that introduced with the 1859 Stars Obverse issue, albeit slightly smaller. The most significant difference, however, is the removal of the stars from the obverse and their replacement with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, relocated from the reverse. The reverse exhibits a new wreath of cereals to replace the more simple wreath first used in 1837. Its first year status and generous mintage of 798,000 circulation strikes had made the 1860 Philadelphia Mint issue a favorite with type collectors.
