- 1846-C Liberty Quarter Eagle. Winter Variety 1 (7-F), the only known dies. AU-55 (PCGS). The Charlotte Mint reopened in October of 1846 after a fire on July 27, 1844 had halted production. With so few weeks left before year's end, it should come as no surprise to read that only 4,808 Quarter Eagles were struck in this facility with the 1846 date. The 1846-C rivals the 1842-C as the fourth-rarest Charlotte Mint Quarter Eagle, and Doug Winter (2008) accounts for only 100-125 survivors in all grades.<br /> This conditionally rare Choice AU exhibits light green-gold color that brightens to more of a yellow-gold sheen at direct angles. The strike is typically soft in the center of the reverse, but generally bold elsewhere, and we see little in the way of actual wear. A bit scuffy, yet no more so than one should expect for a C-mint gold coin at this grade level.
