- 1915 Indian Eagle. Proof-65 (NGC). This is the final proof issue in the Indian Eagle series, a paltry mintage of just 75 coins indicating the unpopularity of the matte proofing style among the contemporary public. Survivors are even rarer than the original mintage might suggest, and Jeff Ambio (2008) believes that only 20-30 coins escaped melting in the Mint. The 1915 vies with the 1912 as the rarest proof Indian Eagle in an absolute sense, and it is the rarest issue of the type in high grades (read: Proof-65 or finer).<br /> A very attractive Gem with pale honey-rose color, both sides also possess a razor-sharp strike to all devices. There are no sizeable contact marks or detracting "shiny spots" to report, another feature that allows ready appreciation of the coarse-grain sandblast finish for which the issue is known. An important offering for the advanced collector of 20th century United States gold coinage.
