1854 Liberty Half Eagle. MS-63 (NGC). Frosty light yellow gold with traces of deeper gold toning along the rims. Bright and highly lustrous. A couple of thin scratches are noted, but the overall eye appeal is little affected. The NGC Census suggests many mint state pieces, but none are more than a point higher than this one and we suspect that this is either an error in the reports or the result of many re-submissions of one coin in search of an MS-65. Comparison with the PCGS reports are revealing, as they have graded six in this grade, and only two finer. Likely rarer than suggested by the numbers reported to have been graded.
