- 1853 U.S. Assay Office of Gold--Moffat. $20 Gold. K-19. Rarity-5+. VF-30 (PCGS). OGH--Second Generation. The final Territorial gold issue attributed to Moffat & Co., the 1853 K-19 Twenty is actually a product of the United States Assay Office of Gold. The principals of this firm--Curtis, Perry and Ward--retained the right to use the Moffat & Co. name on coinage after they took over the firm upon John Little Moffat's retirement. This piece displays the distinct design of the issue, which is very similar to the contemporary Liberty Double Eagle of the United States Mint. A handsome-looking piece, both sides are awash in rich, even, olive-orange patina. Both sides are quite bold at the assigned grade, there are few abrasions of note and we even see traces of original luster in the protected areas around the peripheral devices. On the debit side, however, is overall glossiness to the surfaces that points to a cleaning--a not uncommon attribute for a privately minted gold coin that survived the rustic conditions of Gold Rush California.
