- The 1849 quarter eagle is a conditionally RARE coin. Comparable to other dates of the era, the date is somewhat available in low grade, but Mint State coins are rare. In fact, David Akers wrote "Choice specimens are very rare, the only strictly uncirculated piece that I have seen being the one purchased by Harry Bass at the Scanlon Sale." Today, PCGS CoinFacts estimates a survival of 115 in all grades, 15 in Mint State grades. This beautiful MS62+ is clearly in the condition census, among the nine highest graded at PCGS. The surfaces are glowing with a fully CHOICE golden luster. Satiny brilliance hits the light and becomes quite flashy. The devices are well struck and the surfaces are sleek and clean for the assigned grade. The eye appeal is awesome for sure! PCGS 6, NGC 7, CAC 1. This is the SOLE MS62+ at either service, and there are just 8 finer, 6 in MS63 and 2 in MS64. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $5,000 and there are no recent APRs to compare this rarity to. The last PCGS MS62 sold for $3,290 in our July 2018 Regency Auction (an OGH coin from the Chester Roche Collection), and an MS63 sold over a decade ago. This coin will likely break a record for the grade range and will fit nicely in any SUPERB gold collection. Cert. Number 41954965 PCGS # 7752
