- K-3, R.5. Among all territorial and private gold coins, an 1860 Clark, Gruber & Company issue is one of the most interesting to own. Dave Bowers' book, More Adventures with Rare Coins, devoted a chapter to this specific issue. The 1860 $10 is the epitome of the Clark, Gruber series, the signature variety with a greatly exaggerated design of Pikes Peak on the obverse. Although $20 coins were made of the same design and are very rare, it is the $10 that is better recorded in history. The present piece shows an especially sharp strike, minimal marks, no planchet problems, and no edge bruises. The surfaces have toned a rich cherry-red color in a somewhat mottled fashion lending to this coin's originality. The rare and popular "Pike's Peak" ten dollar has been a favorite of gold collectors for decades. This true Mint State example is about as nice as one is ever likely to encounter. (PCGS 10137)
