- A truly fabulous GEM example of this classic Red Book variety! Two die pairings correspond to the Silly Head variety, N-4 and N-9. The N-4, as offered here is a Rarity-1, but it is quite challenging to find in GEM grades, especially with CAC approval. The colorful names for the 1839 portrait styles date to June 1868--less than 30 years after they were produced, and they have stuck ever since. The surfaces are gleaming with a rich, original red luster that peers through the dusting of soft brown and iridescent patina on both sides. Well struck from Noyes die state C/B which is defined by heavy flow lines on the obverse, leading to soft dentils on most or the rim; likewise the reverse has some peripheral weakness at the dentils. The only flaw of note is a tiny patch of shallow marks in the right obverse field, but these are quite minor and will forever serve to identify this GEM as the E.S.M. coin. PCGS 7, NGC 2, CAC 6. The most recent Silly Head MS65 RB to sell was the N-9 in our May 2021 sale of the Sommelier Collection, which realized $10,565. This coin sold before that in August 2020 for $9,000 as part of the E.S.M. Collection. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $12,000 and the CAC CPG value is listed at $11,200. VERY RARE any finer, with just three graded higher in the designation. Bound for another WORLD CLASS collection of early coppers. Good luck. Cert. Number 25644767 PCGS # 1749
