- THE BOYLSTON COLLECTION PART II A very popular "transitional" pattern, featuring the regular issue 1864 Proof obverse, paired with a Motto reverse, as adopted in 1866. Struck in silver with a reeded edge, this is considered Rarity-7-, with just a half dozen graded between PCGS and NGC total. Housed in a first generation PCGS "rattler" holder, this coin has not appeared in auction since July 2010, and is tied for FINEST seen at PCGS. Richly toned with tangerine-peach, deep golden-amber, and light blue that come out in a light. The underlying mirrors are flashy and boldly reflective. Care was clearly taken in the striking of this piece, with razor sharp definition to the details. The surfaces are GEM quality defined! These were likely struck as restrikes for collectors produced in the late 1860s and early 1870s for collectors. Tracing the provenance of this rarity is proving difficult, as the black and white half tone photos from Kagin's and Stack's catalogs of the 1960s and 1970s are hard to compare the toning pattern. Andrew Pollock enumerated perhaps a total of a half dozen pieces. PCGS 2, NGC 0, CAC 1. This exceptional GEM sold back in July 2010 for a record $20,700 and the current Collectors Universe value is listed at $22,500. There are NONE finer in the designation, and there is a PCGS PR65+ DCAM on the Population Report, a coin which has never sold in auction. This fresh, original GEM will see very strong bidding! Good luck! Cert. Number 2051338 PCGS # 60562.00
