- GREAT BRITAIN. National Exhibition of Shakespeare's Works Silver Medal, 1803. PCGS MS-61 Secure Holder.
48 mm. Eimer-950; BHM-553. The Immortal Bard, sitting on a rock, flanked by the Muse of Drama and the Genius of Painting; Reverse: sixteen line inscription. The edge lettered: "SIR ALURED CLARKE". Field Marshal Sir Alured Clarke (1744-1832) was quite a remarkable person. He was the officer in charge of all British troops in Georgia during the American Revolution and was then deployed to Philadelphia to supervise the evacuation of British prisoners of war at the at the end of that conflict. Later he was appointed Governor of Jamaica and then Lieutenant-Governor of Lower Canada. Following that he was sent to India where he became Commander-in-Chief of the Madras Army, then briefly Governor-General of India and finally Commander-in-Chief of India during the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War. Multi-color iridescent toning overlies reflective fields. Ancient silver polish residue is still evident within many letters of the legends, as well as in the deeper crevices of the design, but this does not distract from the overall appeal of the medal.
Estimate: $300 - $500.
