- 1833 Capped Bust Quarter. B-1. Rarity-7+ (as a Proof). Proof-64 Cameo (PCGS). CAC. This lustrous specimen is fully brilliant with frosted motifs and reflective fields, and aside for some scattered haymarks and a tick or two, the surfaces are immaculate. As a rule, Proofs of the 1830s are great rarities regardless of the denomination, and the present example is obviously no exception to that rule. Just three examples of this formidable rarity have been certified by PCGS, including a Proof-64 non-cameo specimen and two Cameo Proofs, the present coin and a Proof-65 Cameo. (For comparison purposes we note that NGC has certified four Proofs of the date; the combined total for Proofs of the date between the two grading services is seven pieces, though we suspect there may a resubmission or two hiding somewhere in the tally.) The PCGS website suggests that as few as three to five Proofs of the date can be accounted for today.
The most recent prices realized for this issue is the PCGS Proof-65 specimen that realized $149,500 as lot 308 in Heritage's May 2008 Long Beach Signature Auction. The Collectors Universe price for the 1833 quarter in Proof-64 Cameo is $100,000. For further comparison, we sold a Proof-64 NGC / CAC example of the 1835 Capped Bust quarter for $115,000 as lot 11341 in our August 2012 Chicago ANA Rarities Night Auction. Unlike the Proof 1833 we are offering here, the Proof 1835 we sold last year was not designated as a Cameo, and the 1835 is a slightly more plentiful issue with approximately eight specimens known to exist (as opposed to just three to five survivors for the Proof 1833). Clearly, the Proof 1833 quarter offered in this lot qualifies as a great rarity among early U.S. Mint coinage, and it should fetch a strong price at auction commensurate with its numismatic significance.
