- Superb 1747 Machin's Mills Halfpenny
1747 Machin's Mills Halfpenny. Vlack 1-47A, W-7660. Rarity-5. GEORGIVS II. VF-35 (PCGS).
129.0 grains. Choice and smooth chocolate brown with the sort of eye appeal and surface quality that collectors simply do not encounter on this issue. Well struck, still soft around George's eye as always, but better detailed than almost ever seen. Ideally centered on both sides. A natural planchet pit in the soft part of the obverse is present, and a thin old scratch at Britannia's feet is a problem only if you're overly picky. A positively gorgeous 1747 Machin's, both finer and sharper than the Ringo coin. Your cataloger has seen just one 1747 Machin's this nice on the market, a PCGS EF-40, which brought $19,550 in the May 2008 Heritage sale. While a good Condition Census on this issue doesn't exist, if this isn't among the top six coins I'd be shocked. Worthy of a shockingly high bid from savvy specialists.
PCGS# 445.
Provenance: From the John "Jack" Royse Collection.
PCGS Population: 1; 1 finer (EF-40).
