- PHILIPPINES. 1/4 Real, ND (ca. 1770). Charles III (1759-88). PCGS EF-45 Gold Shield.
KM-4; cf.Basso-50; Restrepo-2.1. Type I, wide castle with four windows, inward tail. This undated silver cuartilla is often attributed to the Philippines but was almost certainly not made there. According to Jorge Restrepo in 2006 a hoard of this type of Cuartillas and 8 Reales dated 1770 was found in the corner stone of a church in Bogota, Colombia all in uncirculated condition indicating that they were struck in that year. Since these undated types bare no mint mark they were probably struck for general colonial use and shipped to the Philippines in quantity. Boldly struck and light grey fields and tops of the devices which deepens amongst the design features. An attractive little piece worthy of further research.
Estimate: $125 - $175.
Provenance: From the Ray Czahor Collection.
Purchased from Jess Peters.
