- GREAT BRITAIN. 1/2 Crown, 1746. London Mint. George II. PCGS EF-45.
S-3695A; KM-584.3. The Lima designation commemorates the seizure of a Spanish treasure fleet off the coast of Peru, which was supposedly the source of the silver in this coin. Consistent wear across the surfaces, with an attractive muted tone. No distracting nicks or weak spots.
As a Hanoverian king, George II’s time was spent split between the affairs of both Britain and Hannover. George was very much a delegator, preferring not to make any political decisions, he spent a large portion of his time playing cards or hunting. Though disinclined from politics, George II was very much a hawkish personality when it came to war, being well pleased when Britain reopened hostilities with Spain in the War of Jenkins Ear. Later in his regency, conflict broke out between France and Great Britain over their colonial empires. Full blown war followed during the Seven Years War, though he did not live to its conclusion. George II died in October of 1760, and he remains the last monarch to be buried at Westminster Abbey. As with his predecessors and successors, a large shortage of small change, particularly coppers, plagued both Britain and her Colonies that was not alleviated by the powers that be. Vast amounts of private coinage, along with foreign coins circulated freely amongst British small change in order to carry the day-to-day functions of ordinary business.
Estimate: $150 - $250.
