- 1844-O Liberty Eagle. MS-63 (NGC). Tied with one other coin of this date as the Finest Known of the year, coincidentally both of these were recovered from the shipwreck of the S.S. New York that went down in 1846. Eighteen lives were lost in that tragedy, but most of the passengers survived and were rescued that fateful afternoon by another passing ship. The surfaces are bright with no hint of toning to be found, they also lack any significant handling marks or scratches. One trace of white oceanic residue lies above the eagle's head in the field, a telltale speck of evidence of its long stay on the bottom of the ocean. As to the strike, all design elements are full and complete, the eagle's claws, feathers and leaves match the fullness of Liberty's curl separation. Despite a mintage of 118,700 pieces, very few survive in mint state, certainly no more than two dozen in lower mint state grades. Housed in the leather book as created by the Gentlemen of Fortune that teamed up to recover this shipwreck.
